Getting a spell checker and auto-correct to work with a bluetooth keyboard
One catch with using a bluetooth keyboard is that the excellent auto-correction that comes with the Google Keyboard App is not available. Here is one simple trick to get the best of both worlds...
Following on from my previous posts I am going to assume (yes, I know this is naughty) that you have installed the Google Keyboard App. Of course a bluetooth keyboard would also be necessary.
When you connect a bluetooth keyboard to a Samsung device and your default is the Google Keyboard you may be told by the system that you have to use the Samsung Keyboard. It may even force this as the default.
Do not fear this is not the case.
After connecting your bluetooth keyboard (and mine is the Logitech K480 keyboard) go into Settings > Language and Input
From here tap on 'Default', a pop-up will appear with the various keyboards you have installed.
See image on the left - set the default keyboard back to 'Google Keyboard' - though you will see your bluetooth keyboard listed, do not worry, it will still work.
Back in your App (on the right a Clarinspect form), tap on a text field. this is important - you have to tap, clicking with your mouse will not do it.
The Google Keyboard App will now appear, with that all important auto-correct in plain view.
Though you lose a bit of screen real-estate, this is no more than you lose when working in the field.
As you type on your bluetooth keyboard the auto-correct will work as before. You can tap on the option you want to use to correct a spelling, or if you have a mouse connected, then you can click on it.
In summary then, it would be much better if the Google keyboard detected that a bluetooth keyboard were connected and only show the auto-correct line, however what we have (as above) is much better than nothing!
This really is the best of both worlds.
